55 lb. Spiny Lobster Caught in Northern Chesapeake

Baltimore, MD – The largest recorded lobster was caught in the northern Chesapeake Bay this week. Weighing 55 lbs. 3 oz., “Charlie” has beat the size record for any species of lobster by more than ten pounds. Whereas the American Lobster can grow to sizes that held the previous records, spiny lobsters tend to weigh less than 20 pounds. It has been identified as being of the species Panulirus stimpsoni, or Chinese spiny lobster, rather than the Caribbean or Florida spiny lobster, Panulirus argus.

“Charlie” has been taken to the National Aquarium in Baltimore and will be featured in the crustacean exhibit beginning on April 15th.
